Week 8: Self-Doubt

“Keep your face to the sunshine, and you cannot see a shadow.”
— Helen Keller

Last week I was overwhelmed by self-doubt. Self-defeating thoughts invaded my mind. And escapism; curling into a ball and binging on Netflix, seemed like an attractive option.

I resisted the urge!

I was battling the post-vacation blues. My sleep patterns were out of whack (3.30 am airport departure). The rental car bill was ten times what it should have been (my fault). My webinar numbers were down. And I was experiencing feelings of insecurity.

Together, they delivered a lethal cocktail of self-doubt – the most dangerous obstacle on the journey to Greatness.

Our thoughts are powerful. When you spend the day thinking about how bad things are and how much worse they might get, you're going to be drawn that reality.

Yoda's famous quote comes to mind:

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

Well...

Self-doubt is the path to the dark side. Self-doubt leads to depression. Depression leads to Netflix. Netflix leads to stagnation.

It's almost that simple.

The alternative is to feed your mind with positive thoughts. Taking the time to think about how things are going and your accomplishments. Taking the time to think about your vision and where you are going. Filling your mind with positive thoughts that fuel you to create those results.

No matter what kind of day you're having; you have the choice of what kind of thoughts you allow to creep into your mind.

If you want a great life, cultivate a positive mindset.

Now, of course, a positive mindset must be supported by consistent positive action. Else, stagnation will still take hold.

Action coupled with a positive mindset is a powerful force.

'Yes, a Jedi's strength flows from the Force.'

We have a choice about the thoughts we allow to dwell in our minds. When I find my focus drifting toward self-doubt, I surround myself with people who influence my thoughts in positive way.

Next time to find yourself slipping into self-doubt...

  • Read inspiring books
  • Listen to inspiring podcasts
