Adventures in Google: How to setup Google Authorship

When Google first launched Google Apps, I have to admit being one of the first to the first to shout: “Where do we sign-up?”

We quickly moved all our business email into the cloud. It was much simplair than running an exchange server and at that time far more cost effective – it was free! 

Since then times have changed, back then life with Google was much simpler. Now, setting up what should be really straight forward stuff has become confusing and at times really frustrating.

Over the past few days I’ve spent a lot of time working with a client, they do great work creating mobile clinics that bring healthcare to school children, to setup Google Authorship and Google+ Local accounts.

In this post I want to share the process of setting up a Google Authorship account, it’s actually not that difficult. Just make sure you test it’s working properly after you’ve done the setup.

Google Authorship

You’re creating some great content but you can’t understand why your profile picture isn’t appearing on SERPs (search engine results pages). 

What you need to do is configure Google Authorships. It doesn’t take too long to do and if your website is running on a nifty tool like HubSpot or WordPress it’s really easy.

Why Use Google Authorship?

Google Authorship was created with the goal of allowing authors to claim their content and give search engine users a way to find more content written by the same author. Essentially, it’s a system that determines the quality of content based on the credibility or reputation of its author. 

Getting Setup

Start by linking your Google+ profile to the content you create, to do this you need to check 4 things:

  1. Make sure you have a profile photo with a recognisable head shot (kinda like getting a passport)
  2. Make sure a byline containing your name appears on each page of your content (for example, “By Jean Moncrieff”)
  3. Make sure the byline matches your name on your Google+ profile.
  4. Verify you have an email address (such as on the same domain as your content.

If you don’t have an email address on the same domain, don’t worry there is another way to connect to your profile.

Once you’ve been through the email verification process, use the Rich Snippet Testing Tool to verify whether or not Google Authorship has been set up successfully.

Author information not appearing? It may not appear if Google doesn’t think it will be useful to the user doing the search.
